The Laundry

laundryThe Laundry was built by James Douglas Fletcher and was used mainly by the tenants of the Factory Building.

It was located on the north side of the burn near the main road bridge. Women brought firewood to heat up the boilers and the burn supplied clean fresh water.

Clothes were dried on ropes between poles on the shore or between trees in the Claes Widdie, a group of fir trees north west of the church of Scotland.
